Over this last few years much has changed in the construction and home improvement industry. We now have much more stringent building and health and safety regulations. In particular since the 1st January 2005 there has come into force what is known as "Part P" of the building regulations which covers all aspects of electrical installation in domestic property. These new rules are legally binding on all parties, homeowner and contractor alike, with heavy penalties for non compliance. In my day to day interaction with my clients it has become clear that the general public is not aware of the full implications of these regulations. I will not bore you with the details here except to say that as and when you have any electrical work carried out I strongly urge you to question the potential contractor as regards their legal status regarding Part P. Unfortunately, due to the "ideosyncracies" (one could just as easily insert
"stupidity") of the new rules it is not sufficient just to be a fully qualified electrican, one has to have also gained certification under the new rules. Failure to cover this aspect might not only prove to be expensive by way of penalties but could also jeopardise your household insurance cover. To give you an idea of the extent of the limitations, an uncertified person may not modify any circuitry whatsoever, they can change an electrical fitting for a new one, so long as it does not increase its rating, for
instance you may change an old single power oulet face plate for a new single, but not replace it with a double outlet.
We supply and install Water softeners. The water in our area is Hard and great benefit is obtained by installing an "ion exchange" water softener. These modern units are compact and very efficient giving a host of benefits to any household, such as; - Scum free bathing.
- Dramatically less soap and detergant use.
- Longer life for all water using machines and heaters.
- No more Calcium staining on sanitary ware, taps and faucets.
- Because soft water is virtually free of Calcium the house plumbing
does not fill up with scale.

This customer does occasional hairdressing at home; Amongst numerous other work at this property we had installed a new kitchen, using redundant offcuts from the new worktops used in the main kitchen along with some of the old but still serviceable kitchen units I designed and built this "Hideaway" wash unit. It has a retractable spray head on a flixible hose and is supplied with both hot and cold water which can be adjusted for correct temperature.
